Modern Office Furniture
The big office furniture buzzword is ‘ergonomic’. That just means you can use the furniture the way it’s supposed to be used without it contributing to your backache, eyestrain, or carpal tunnel syndrome. The most important piece of office furniture is your chair. Your desk is just a flat, horizontal plane. Anything beyond that is merely a matter of taste and money. But your chair is where you will spend the most time and it must hit you in the right spots or you’ll be sorry, not to mention, sore. This is the one piece of office furniture you really ought to buy in the 3-D world. It’s hard to squeeze your posterior into a computer screen to try out a chair. And do try it out. Sit. Lean. Squirm. Lounge. Lean over to open a drawer. Reach for something. The chair must stay comfortable, with good back support. Buy a chair that fits. A big chair on a small person not only looks silly, it can be very uncomfortable when the neck rest hits the back of your head and you have no lower-back support. Ditto a chair that’s too small, but that’s hardly ever a problem. If the chair has a lift, that’s a good thing. It’s easier to raise a chair than lower a desk, for instance.
Once you have your chair, the rest is easy. Get what you need, that you can afford. If you like it too, that’s always nice. If you are in a position to choose, get furniture that makes you feel you want to spend quality time with it. After all, you are going to be spending a lot of time there, may as well make it as pleasant as you can. Where did the notion come from that office furniture needs to be sterile and antiseptic looking? Does ‘professional’ have to mean cold and uninviting? Does an office have to look like some futuristic jail cell? No, it does not. It’s your office. Make it a place that you want to work in.
